Being courteous

During a TN50 dialogue session with the prime minister last week, Metrowealth Pictures (MIG) chief executive David Teo was slapped by Terengganu actor Sulaiman Yassin while the former voiced out his views.

Although the duo later shook hands in front of the PM, the incident has not come to a conclusion yet, as it has sparked fiery criticisms among the public and triggered the police to step in and summon them to assist in investigation.

According to Sulaiman, Teo had acted disrespectfully to the prime minster and he wanted to teach him some courtesy.

Sulaiman's act was supported by Malay NGO GMPN which believed Sulaiman had slapped Teo to stop him from acting rudely. Even with GMPN's endorsement, there is no way to justify Sulaiman's behavior.

Let's put aside whether Teo had acted discourteously to the prime minster on that day, acting rough just because someone else has acted discourteously must be censured at all costs.

Malaysia is a country ruled by law, and no one has the right to physically hurt another person out of any excuse. As a matter of fact, acting rough in front of a country's leader is itself extremely disrespectful.

The dialogue session was held to listen to the views of all quarters, and should ideally be held peacefully. However, in the event a scuffle breaks out, the authorities and organizers must promptly and effectively mediate so as to ensure that views would continue to be heard in a rational manner..
